Charlie Langton trained for a year at the Edinburgh College of Art and a further year and a half in Florence, at the Charles Cecil studio. It was here that he developed an appreciation for the work of the old masters and in particular Leonardo da Vinci. His understanding of his subject, design and technique, is something that inspires him in his own work. Langton's portraits are drawn, painted and sculpted from life.
Charlie learnt the true importance of this at Charlie Cecil's studio, where observing and understanding the human figure from life is paramount. This is something that is extremely important to him. Langton believes to capture a character, whether it be human or equine, it is necessary to study them from life. George Stubbs is also a huge inspiration to him, he feels the passion for understanding his subjects was incredible. Ironically Langton and Stubbs share the same Birthday!
The underlying theme of Charlie Langton's work is understanding the form of portraying it in different mediums. He works in pencil, charcoal, chalk, oil, plaster, bronze, silver and soon, he hopes, marble. Langton's work is grounded in the ethos of the old masters but he has his own interpretation of the subjects.
Charlie Langton’s life size, and over life size, commissioned portraits of the greatest thoroughbreds in the world grace the finest collections.
